A new law was passed today to protect the rights of workers here. Many foreign companies objected, saying that the new laws made it too difficult to do business here and that they would face tougher enforcement than local companies.
Today, some industries here look like industries in the US during the robber baron era--Companies have all the power and workers rights to a safe work environment and prompt payment of wages are often ignored. I'm happy to see that the government here is doing something to help build a more sustainable economy instead of allowing companies to squeeze out more from low-wage workers.
Foreign companies do have a legitimate concern that they will be targeted for enforcement while local companies may not need to comply with the new laws. China is trying to support the development of local industry. To truly build a harmonious society (a stated goal), all employers must follow the law and give workers their due.

Hey Tom...great,great blog...good reading, well-written and just plain fascinating!
Have been reviewing the Peace Corp application process and boy it is cool to read about the reality of your time there...students...work..."time off" stuff ... The pix are great, the comments and referrals to articles ditto...really like the historical comments that you throw in...
As an "older" applicant who has practiced law for years and now has lessened responsibilities (son age 22 in college...studying business and..you guessed it...Chinese) I'm checking out the Peace Corps...oh, right, only 30 years after I first thought about it...ha.
Really, really enjoy your writing. Puh-leeze keep it up in your new assignment teaching the new volunteers...this Detroit mom appreciates the window into the reality of your volunteer time in China.....
KUDOS to you and ....
xiexie!
Best,
Marle in Detroit
Are Unions around the corner? Seems like if workers banned together they may have a esier time getting these things done.... Not that I like unions or anything. But, in this case I can see a point.
